U.S.: Be careful with IranMonday, November 22, 2010 | 11:25 pm
Latin American countries need to be careful with Iran and motivation when they discuss the development of nuclear capabilities, said U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates in Santa Cruz on Sunday.
"I think countries that deal with Iran in this field need to be very careful about how they interact with Iran in terms of what Iran's motives and what they really trying to do," said Robert Gates told reporters ahead of the Pan-defense America.
The host country Bolivia is one country who are interested in developing nuclear capabilities with Tehran. U.S. and some Western powers believe that Iran's nuclear program for military purposes while Tehran protested that its nuclear program for civilian purposes.
"I do not know exactly what Iran actually do, so you really know the truth," Gates said."If they talk about civil nuclear power, then all can be maintained by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and we will not question it. But I do not believe Iran has the independent ability to help anyone who is building a civilian nuclear capability. The ability of their still have under contract with Russia for 20 years, "Gates said.
